Mandatory environmental labelling on all packaging in Italy

The Legislative Decree n. 116/2020 has made environmental labelling compulsory for packaging of the products intended for the final consumer in Italy. The primary goal is to indicate to final consumers the appropriate disposal of each packaging type.

The Legislative Decree n. 116/2020 has made environmental labelling compulsory for packaging of the products intended for the final consumer in Italy. The primary goal is to indicate to final consumers the appropriate disposal of each packaging type.

According to the law, all packaging shall be "appropriately labelled in accordance with the procedures established in the applicable UNI technical standards and in compliance with the decisions adopted by the European Commission, in order to facilitate the collection, reuse, recovery and recycling of packaging, and to provide consumers with proper information on the final destination of packaging. For the purposes of identifying and classifying packaging, producers are also required to indicate the nature of the packaging materials used, on the basis of Commission Decision 97/129/EC."

While the Decree did not provide for a transition period and became effective immediately, the obligation to comply with certain provisions of the Decree was extended until December 31, 2021 by the Milleproroghe Decree 2021, which was published in the Italian Official Gazette on December 31, 2020.

In order to facilitate the interpretation of the new regulation, the national packaging consortium CONAI in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Packaging has created the guidelines on the new labelling procedure. For more details, please refer to the CONAI Guide.
