Ecodesign Directive: On 20 November 2009, the Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and Council came into effect Europe-wide. The Ecodesign Directive was supposed to be implemented into national law of all member states establishing a framework for requirements of energy-related products design. In addition to all energy-using products and product groups, except vehicles, there are also products in scope which have an influence of the energy consumption like insulation or windows.
The aim of the Ecodesign Directive is to eliminate most inefficient equipment from the European market in order to ultimately achieve the national and European climate protection goals. In the course of individual so-called implementing measures of the Ecodesign Directive minimum efficiency requirements are set for different product groups. The Ecodesign Directive itself contains no detailed product requirements. Ecodesign of products, as well as the saving of energy and other resources should be promoted within the production, operation and disposal.
In Germany, the Ecodesign Directive is implemented by the "energy-using appliances act (EuPA)" (Energiebetriebene-Produkte-Gesetz/EBPG).
