As reported by the Council of the European Union, it formally adopted the new Regulation on packaging and packaging waste (EU Packaging Regulation / PPWR) on 16 December 2024. Formal adoption by the Council is the final step in the ordinary legislative procedure. Following publication in the EU Official Journal, the PPWR is expected to enter into force at the beginning of 2025. The application of many of its provisions will begin after a transitional period of 18 months.
