From 1 January 2027, the revised Packaging Ordinance (VerpV) is going to apply in Switzerland. It is based on some principles of the EU PPWR, including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This covers areas such as waste collection, take-back and recycling, as well as closer alignment with European recycling targets.
What is the difference?
Many product-specific PPWR requirements will not apply in Switzerland, including:
- PFAS restrictions for certain food packaging
- Recyclability classes
- Specific minimum recycled content
- EU packaging and sorting labels
- Certain packaging bans and restrictions
What does this mean for you?
Companies selling in both the EU and Switzerland will need to follow two sets of packaging rules, which can differ in important ways. Using the stricter EU requirements as a common standard can help companies avoid creating different packaging versions for different markets.
