The EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR), coming into effect 12 August 2026, will introduce major changes for companies that manufacture, use, or place packaging on the EU market. More businesses will be affected than ever, as country-specific thresholds, like those in Belgium and the Netherlands, will no longer apply.
If I sell to Belgium or the Netherlands, what does that mean for me?
Among other changes, local thresholdsin Member States will no longer be applicable. As a result, starting on 12 August 2026, producers who sell less than 300 kg of packaging in Belgium or less than 50 tonnes of packaging in the Netherlands will also need to register their business and disclose the packaging they sell.
Can I already join a producer responsibility organisation in Belgium or the Netherlands?
The producer responsibility organisations (PROs) in Belgium and the Netherlands are in the process of adapting to the latest legal changes. For small and medium-sized producers, a streamlined quantity reporting system is anticipated. As soon as the PROs have made the necessary adjustments, we will notify you.
