As reported by Bauernzeitung and TableMedia, the EU Parliament's Environment Committee supports an objection to the country classification of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which was submitted by Austrian EPP MEP Alexander Bernhuber (trade-e-bility reported: EUDR country benchmarking in force). He criticises the fact that the classification is based on outdated data and does not take sufficient account of regional differences. Countries such as Austria, where the forest area is growing, are penalised as a result, while countries with actual deforestation are not classified as high-risk areas. Bernhuber is calling for the introduction of a "zero-risk category". The EU Parliament will vote on the objection in around three weeks' time, but it is not legally binding on the Commission. The process shows that companies affected by the EUDR need to be constantly up to date.
