How the PPWR affects the UK: Businesses face pressure to adapt

The PPWR applies to businesses that place packaging on the EU market – thus also affecting UK companies selling to the EU. They need to adapt their packaging, processes and data to meet new EU standards for recyclability, material use and documentation.

The UK retail sector is feeling the pressure of the EU’s new packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPWR): A survey found that 93 per cent of UK manufacturers and suppliers are affected. Among 200 non-food companies, 16 per cent have already changed their packaging, while 39 per cent are still working on it.

Reliable data is just as important as the packaging itself. Companies need clear records of materials, quantities and technical details, including information from suppliers. UK EPR rules are also affecting operations: 70 per cent of affected companies report more repackaging, while 47 per cent even report more packaging waste. The focus is therefore on recyclable, efficient packaging, suitable package sizes and less repackaging while still protecting products, controlling costs and maintaining a good customer experience.
