Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) has won a case against a well-known brand discounter at the Amberg Regional Court. The discounter was ordered to take back old small electrical appliances free of charge, which it had previously refused to do. The judgement is not yet legally binding. According to DUH, supermarkets that sell electrical appliances often act in breach of the statutory take-back obligation. DUH has also won similar lawsuits against other retail companies. Due to falling collection rates for e-waste (2023: 29.7 per cent), Germany is being reprimanded by the EU for non-compliance. DUH has announced that it will carry out further tests in supermarkets and drugstores and take legal action against violations.
