Despite the fact that producers already license registered brands with corresponding labels, the German Environment Agency views this model as inadequate. The deciding factor being that the devices do not originate directly from the producer. Consequently, producers must also register their brand with the EAR Foundation (German registration board for electronic equipment and batteries).

By 15 January 2026 at the latest, battery producers must participate in a producer responsibility organisation (PRO resp. OfH – “Organisation für Herstellerverantwortung”).
