Austria: Battery Registration is mandatory

An amendment to the Austrian Battery Ordinance came into force on 8th July 2021. We would like to inform you about important changes that will take place starting January 2022. With the adjustment of the term “Producer”, non-Austrian distance sellers who sell directly to end users in Austria are now obliged to participate in a take-back system and to appoint an authorized representative. Furthermore, there are changes regarding obligations to provide information in stores.

UK: Plastic Packaging Tax expected to come into force in April 2022

This tax will impose a flat fee of £200 per ton on primary, secondary or transit packaging containing less than 30% recycled content.

France packaging act: Final approval of the harmonised sorting information guidelines

This July, the French packaging take-back schemes submitted to the French authority a proposal concerning the sorting information guidelines. The French government gave their approval to validate this proposal on the 9th September 2021. This decision will allow the take-back schemes to release their definitive version of the harmonised sorting information, together with a user hand book and all necessary technical specifications. The information will be released shortly.

Amazon requires proof of registration according to the Packaging Act, Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act and the Battery Act

As reported by Internetrecht Rostock, Amazon is currently contacting sellers identified by Amazon as manufacturers who sell to Germany and/or France about the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations. Amazon has announced that it will suspend non-compliant listings, i.e. remove them from the platform.

Take-back obligation for batteries in the EU

Companies that distribute across borders to end-users are at the same time in the position of battery producers with corresponding obligations. Physical stores must collect all types of waste portable batteries if portable batteries are distributed from that shop.
