WEEE/ElektroG – Luminaires with securely attached light sources have to be registered

Modifications of the administrative practice for lighting equipment already starting on February 1st, 2013

Modifications of the administrative practice for lighting equipment already starting on February 1st, 2013

Dear VERE e.V. members, dear take-e-way customers,

As we have learned from informed circles, the Foundation EAR (German WEEE registration board) will adapt the definition of the terms "Lamp" and "Luminaire" to the European eco-design regulations from February 1st, 2013 on.

Thus also luminaires with securely attached, non-exchangeable light sources such as e.g. Christmas chains of light, LED stripes or correspondingly built pocket lamps come under the obligation to register according to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG / WEEE).

According to our information there will be a transitional period until May 1st, 2013 for this modification of the administrative practice.

Until that date all manufacturers of such devices who had been exempted from the obligation to register up to now have to register.

Therefore, we recommend you to thoroughly check your range of products regarding corresponding devices and forward the information also to friendly companies.

Since a major part of importers and lots of the smaller manufacturers require a longer lead time for a calculation in due form, the VERE Association will stand for a prolongation of the transitional period in particular cases of hardship.

Presumably as of February 1st, 2013 you will be able to find the new definition of lamps and luminaires in the set of rules of the Foundation EAR under https://www.stiftung-ear.de/service/fragen-und-antworten/elektro-und-elektronikgeraete/faqs-beleuchtungskoerper-b2c/.

For any further questions the VERE Association and take-e-way will be at your entire disposal under the phone number +49 / 40 / 21 90 10 – 65 and will also be glad to help you in short-term registration of your devices. With this in mind we remain with

Kind regards
