With effect from July 1st, 2021, the Portuguese environmental authority APA announced the early implementation of the official registration of an authorized representative for waste streams other than Electrical and Electronic devices. The product categories that benefit from this go beyond Batteries and Accumulators as well as Packaging. From January 1st, 2022, registration for such products is mandatory in this way.

Smart home products are required to be registered in Germany as small appliances as contemplated by the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act and not as small ITC devices. In the other EU member states, smart home products are registered in different device types depending on their function.

The Foundation Central Agency Packaging Register has now also published on its website an overview of the amendments to the Packaging Act since 3 July 2021 as well as on 1 January 2022 and 1 July 2022. The fact that a proper registration according to the Packaging Act, where required, is not only in the interest of the environment but also suitable for protection against admonitions, as shown by a current report released by the law firm Richard & Kempcke GbR.

All powerbanks (including those with additional functions) are subject to the German Batteries Act as equipment batteries. Powerbanks with additional functions, being electrical appliances (equipment containing batteries) are likewise subject to the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act.

An interface now allows retailers and marketplaces to use the taxpayer reference number of producers and online retailers to quickly determine whether they are listed in the register. Free riders become more apparent quicker.
