Amazon validates WEEE registration

As take-e-way customers report, Amazon is already taking its forthcoming inspection obligation under the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG) very seriously. For instance, take-e-way has an Amazon letter with the subject “Action needed - EPR Requirement for EEE”, in which Amazon requests its sales partners to enter the WEEE registration number in the Amazon Compliance Portal, which Amazon will validate with the relevant government authority or producer responsibility organisation (PRO).

Disposable e-cigarettes ban in Bavaria and Scotland

As reported by Recycling Magazine, the Bavarian state government passed a Bundesrat initiative at its meeting on 10 January 2023, calling on the federal government to lobby at EU level for a ban on the sale of such disposable products. In addition, the BBC reports that the Scottish government will also consider a ban on single-use cigarettes.

Import control of electrical appliances and batteries in Spain

Since 16 January 2023, importers have been required to enter the registration numbers from the WEEE and batteries register into the joint system of customs and SOIVRE before importing their electrical equipment and batteries from third countries into Spain. This ensures an automatic check that detects the absence of a registration in any case. In addition, conformity with ROHS must be proven by documentation accompanying the product. Only after confirmation of conformity by SOIVRE may customs proceed with the release for free circulation.

Environment Agency prosecutes ElektroG offences

Failure to register or improper registration by a manufacturer (or its authorised representative) constitutes a – sometimes significantly unjustified – competitive advantage for the manufacturer in question. Accordingly, violations of the registration obligation can be punished with a fine of up to 100,000 euros and the economic advantage gained through the violation is also skimmed off on a regular basis.
